Red Island Beach is one of Banyuwangi’s tourism icons. This beach is suitable for relaxing and trying out challenging sports.
Pulau Merah Beach is in Sumber Agung Village, Pesanggaran District, Banyuwangi. From Blambangan Park in the center of Banyuwangi city, the distance is around 71 km which can be reached by vehicle in about two hours.
This beach is known for its green hills near the shoreline. The soil of this hill is red so it is called Red Island.
This hill juts out towards the middle of the sea. Visitors can walk to the hill at low tide.
Red Island Beach offers views that are pleasing to the eye. Apart from that, this beach is also known for its high waves. Suitable for tourists who like surfing. It’s not surprising that many foreign tourists try out the waves at Pulau Merah Beach.
Even in 2013, the President of the Indonesian Surfing Association (INSA) Jro Made Suparta Karang said that Pulau Merah Beach had advantages compared to other surfing spots in Banyuwangi, G-land. As quoted from the official Banyuwangi Regency Government website.
At that time Jro explained one of the reasons. According to him, the waves at G-land are only suitable for professional surfers. Because it’s more challenging. Meanwhile, Pulau Merah’s waves are for amateur and professional surfers.
“This is an opportunity to become family surf tourism because it can bring in more tourists. Surfers can invite their family or friends who are not professionals,” said Jro.
At that time, Jro also compared Red Island to a newly dug pearl. Currently, this beach has become a corner that Banyuwangi is proud of.
“There is an island towering in the middle of the ocean. The beach is wide and long, the sand is good and clean,” added Jro.
